Question of the day

What should be done to detect leaks on an air conditioning system?

To detect leaks in an air conditioning system, charging the system with nitrogen is an effective method. Nitrogen is an inert gas, meaning it does not react with any components of the air conditioning system and can pressurize the system safely. By increasing the pressure in the system using nitrogen, any leaks will become apparent through the sound or visual inspection of escaping gas. A common practice is to apply a soap solution to potential leak points; bubbles will form if there is a leak in the system, thus allowing for precise identification of problem areas. While checking connections with a butane torch might be useful in other contexts, it is not suitable for this application as it can pose a significant fire risk in the presence of refrigerants. The argon/CO2 gas mixture is likewise not a common practice for leak detection and does not provide the same level of safety or effectiveness as pure nitrogen. Comparing low and high side pressures against specifications is essential for evaluating system performance but does not directly help in locating leaks. Therefore, using nitrogen to test for leaks is both safe and effective, making it the preferred method among technicians.

You'll see this trade called two different names depending on the source, Truck and Coach Technician in some provinces, Truck and Transport Mechanic in others, but it's the same Red Seal exam and the same 310T designation underneath. The naming difference doesn't mean two separate credentials.

The exam: 150 multiple-choice questions, 4 hours, covering 10 exam blocks (A through J) built around the trade's full scope, engines, electrical, hydraulics, brakes, and the other core systems.

Content spans the complete truck and transport skill set: diesel engines, heavy vehicle electrical systems, air brakes, steering, suspension, driveline components, transmissions, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, preventive maintenance, diagnostics, inspections, troubleshooting, and workplace safety. Genuinely broad, a working technician's full range of systems knowledge, no narrow specialty slice.

Questions go beyond simple recall, expect scenario-based items testing your ability to diagnose mechanical faults, interpret service information, perform inspections, verify completed repairs, use diagnostic equipment correctly, and apply safe work procedures, the applied judgment a working technician exercises daily.

Prerequisite for the apprenticeship path: a minimum of Grade 12 education or equivalent to enter the Truck and Coach Technician apprenticeship program.

The payoff for passing is real interprovincial mobility. A Red Seal endorsement is recognized across participating Canadian provinces and territories, your certification travels with you if you relocate for work rather than requiring you to requalify under a different provincial standard.

Given how many distinct systems this exam covers across 10 separate blocks, broad and even review across all of them serves you better than deep specialization in whichever systems you happen to work on most in your current shop.

Our practice questions span all 10 official exam blocks, with scenario-based diagnostic and troubleshooting questions matching the real exam's format, plus explanations for every answer.
